Somatics for Women

In this day and age it is important to acknowledge conditions that are specific to women. Most of these conditions are related to physical and / or emotional injuries to the female system, resulting in different types of physical and emotional instability. When the somatic perspective is introduced into the treatment and rehabilitation of specific female conditions, an allowing environment for healing is established.

A few examples how Somatic Rehabilitation / Somatic Education will benefit conditions specific to women:

  • Pre Partum Dysfunction
Many women have difficult pregnancies. Hormonal imbalances, emotional changes and physical pain are not unusual at all. Even though it will become harder for your body to move further into your pregnancy, it is extremely important ‘to move’ and ‘to maintain movement’ in this period of your life. When exercising the somatic core movements of human motion, you will maintain your level of flexibility and reduce your level of tension within your system. This will not only take away a significant amount of your physical discomfort, but will also energize and normalize you as much as possible within your circumstances. Due to the fact that you will have created somatic awareness within your system, you will have better control over your own muscles (the abdominals, diaphragm, back muscles, the pelvic floor region etc.). This somatic control over your own body will directly benefit the delivery of your baby as well as the recuperation period afterwards. Both will become easier and less traumatic. There will be less resistance for your baby when the time has come for him or her to travel through a more relaxed birth canal, while at the same time there will be a reduced chance for physical strain and complications (ruptures, tears etc.). Traumatic deliveries are not only hard on the mother, but they can also be the cause of many disfunctions later in life for your child. Integrating the somatic concepts during pregnancies or deliveries will not only maintain your physical health, but also your emotional stability, resulting in a healthier world for your baby and you. The somatic concepts, which are easy to understand, calming and easily put into practice, can prevent many discomfort and complications.

  • Post Partum Dysfunction
After delivery, we all want to carry on with our lives. However, for many women this is suddenly becoming very hard if not impossible. Physical and / or emotional complications during pregnancy and / or delivery have subconsciously ‘tightened’ up their body. Pelvic pain, hip pain, back pain, headaches and leg pain are all pains that can be related to the post partum blues. ‘Post Partum Pelvic Pain’ or ‘Pelvic Instability’ are the technical medical terms used in cases like this. When not addressed appropriately it is not uncommon to end up in a downward spiral that will create a type of ‘numbness’ throughout your body and throughout your existence. It is not only the physical system that is rebelling, but also the emotional system, the psychological system, the sexual system, the energetic system and the spiritual system. The concept of ‘motherhood’ will have been severely disturbed as well. Many diagnostic tests will not show any significant pathologies, because this is a classic example of dealing with a functional problem. In other words, it is a true somatic dysfunction, meaning that you as a woman will not be able to connect anymore with yourself at many different levels. It is a ‘somatic amnesia’ that creates, maintains or worsens this condition. It will not be until you will start sensing your own body and start moving your own body with internal control and awareness that your spiral will be reversed and will start going upwards. A gentle and individualistic somatic re-education process of learning to sense and learning to move is essential for creating long lasting relief. Assisting programs to normalize energetic, emotional and psychological components can be beneficial and essential as well in this complicated search for somatic freedom.

Post Partum Dysfunction is a horrible event for any mother and her family. Unfortunately it looks as if there will be more and more cases in the future. It will be important to upgrade and educate women in general to prevent Pre- and Post Partum Dysfunction. The Somatic Health Center of St. Helena is very interested in assisting and further developing research and therapy for women. ‘Somatics for Women’ – Workshops can be organized in your area for women as well as their caregivers (doctors, mid wives etc.) Please contact The Somatic Health Center for further information.

  • Osteoporosis
When you have full control and awareness over the core fundamental movement patterns of the human being, your posture will be erect and your movements will be coordinated. Those are basic principles for developing bone strength. When not able to stand up straight and move with ease, you will become prone to balance problems and falling. Many elderly women (and men) unfortunately break their bones while falling. It is nothing else but Sensory Motor Amnesia that creates the lessening in muscular control over posture and movement. Somatic Education can reverse the process of Sensory Motor Amnesia into Sensory Motor Learning within only a few sessions, re-establishing proper strength and flexibility within your system. With minimal effort you will become able to perform your own sequence of daily somatic movements independently, stimulating bone growth to its maximum potential and preventing any possible future falls (and broken bones).

  • Mastectomies
Mastectomies are very invasive. An important part of ‘being female’ is suddenly taken away. For many this is a very stressful process that is accompanied by many complications. Due to the experience and results of the surgery, it is very common to end up with a higher level of muscular tension within your body. Patterns of tightness (frequently affecting the shoulder/arm region) and patterns of pain (maybe even comparable to ‘phantom pain’ ?) often reflect itself in pain and tightness, especially within the regions of the shoulder/chest. It is very fundamental in cases like this to re-educate your body with normal and ‘somatically aware’ movement patterns. A significant turning point in the process of rehabilitation will be the integration of the somatic understanding and movements, instantly creating more physical and emotional freedom.
