Trent Farebrother, Physical Therapist / Manager, Canadian Back Institute Physiotherapy & Rehabilitation, Prince George, BC, Canada I was first introduced to Somatics in the summer of 1999. I had been discussing with a local Sports Medicine Physician the difficulty in treating Chronic Pain patients. She had heard about Somatics and had referred a few patients to Servaas, and was getting promising results. I called Servaas and he explained the theory behind the treatment. I was intrigued and was fortunate enough to have him come to our facility to teach our Therapists an introductory course in Somatics. This was in October of 1999. Since that time we have used Somatics in group and individual sessions with our clients and have noticed quite significant increases in body awareness and range of motion. In addition to this we have found it to be beneficial in treating Chronic Pain. I look forward to learning more about Somatics and I would recommend this treatment to everyone. Collin Milne, DDS, Smithers, BC, Canada Somatics saved my career. My thirty years of contorted body postures over a dental chair, plus a few sports-related injuries, resulted in restricted shoulder mobility, chronic back pain, and painful neck-muscle spasms. I had tried heat, cold, drugs, exercises, stretching, massage, etc., but all relief was transitory. I was feeling frustrated and defeated, and had begun to defensively structure my work day with certain procedures at specific times, to minimize the discomfort. My wife persuaded me to try Somatics. I did on a why-not ? basis. The very first hour with Servaas gave me some increased movement with less pain. I was hopeful, but skeptical, but did my homework faithfully. After 4 sessions, I was a total believer. I have not worked a single day without doing my Somatics routine beforehand, and I have had a full year totally free of neck and back pain. Its hard to believe that something so simple can be so effective no practitioner or special equipment needed. Doreen Haslett (age 54), Legal Assistant, Smithers, BC, Canada The Daily Cat Stretch-Series has been a life changing event for me. I was trapped in a cycle of tension, muscle pain and pain killers. I am now learning to sense tension in my body and how to release it through exercise and stretching. Servaas enthusiasm is contagious he is a great motivator ! Daniel
Imhof, Professional Soccer Player Somatics turned out not only to be a welcome addition to my rehabilitation from ACL surgery, but also to my daily routine. Its a great way to gain control over your body again, each muscle at a time, and it also provides for a state of total relaxation. Somatics is a great way to enhance control over your movement, and I definitely recommend people to try it. Hazelton

Colleagues, Servaas explained the Somatic process for enhancing health and relieving stress through work on body movements, posture and balance. He is a sincere and entertaining leader who promotes comfort and confidence. The activities are relaxing and the atmosphere very positive. We recommend Servaas Mes and the Somatic presentation to you. His holistic approach to healthy living was well received by our staff and we felt great at the end of the workshop. Betty Falkins, Houston, BC, Canada Hi,
Im Betty. By the way, I am 73 years old." Colleen Jones, Smithers, BC, Canada My name is Colleen Jones. I first went to see Servaas Mes after going to the chiropractor for about a year due to lower back and hip pain. The chiropractor had diagnosed it as a bent back due to a shortened right leg. The treatments were not helping, and the back spasms seemed to be getting worse. I went to see Servaas upon the recommendation of friends in the hope of finding some alternative treatment. By the end of the first session, Servaas had shown me my leg was not shorter and my back was not bent. Instead, he showed me that my back muscles on my right side were extremely tight causing everything else to try to compensate. Within an hour and a half, Servaas had the muscles relaxed, and the pains from my neck, back and hip were relieved. I returned to Servaas for 3 more sessions and have now learned how to stop my back and neck spasms when I feel them begin. I learned that the ultimate cause of the spasms is due to my posture when I sit at the computer. In addition to the relief from the pain, I also noted a marked improvement in my allergies and asthma due to the release of tension in my spine. Im no longer a hostage to my pain, and I know what I can do to help my body feel better. Thanks Servaas !! Karl Mast, Smithers, BC, Canada How do you convey to people the personal experience that is like a little miracle in your mind ? I had lifted my granddaughter way up high, so she could pick an icicle off the edge of the roof. While doing so I felt a sharp pain in my lower back and within 2 days the pain was intense, restricting me to slow and painful movements. My ability to walk was reduced to a slow shuffle and with each step I feared the pain would increase and render me immobile. In this shape I arrived at the office of Servaas. I knew a medical doctor or a physiotherapist could do little for me. Servaas was my only hope and I was highly skeptical what results Somatic Exercise treatment would have in a case like mine. Servaas guided me through 1.5 hours of gentle movements that were easy and painless. That made me more skeptical yet. At the end of the session he said I should feel an improvement and should be able to walk. I did not believe it when I put my feet on the floor and made the first awkward steps. Suddenly, just like with a click, I was able to walk and had my freedom of movement again. It was not a brisk walk, but I knew I was on the road to recovery. Experiencing is believing. Chandler
Park Middle School, Smithers, BC, Canada Thank you for your presentation on Somatics. Your presentation was requested by a number of staff who were aware of your work related to stress management, but it was also specifically of interest to a number of staff who have long term problems related to past illnesses, prior accidents, or accumulated stress symptoms. I attended the presentation and I appreciated your professionalism. The lessons were very well explained, and the exercises were conducted with consideration for people with prior conditions who might need special care or adaptations. Knowing of your professional training as a physiotherapist gave me additional confidence that the exercises you recommended would be beneficial. Congratulations and thank you for the very interesting and valuable session. Kispiox

Servaas; Following
are some comments which were sought for this letter of recommendation: Dee Jay Cravatta, Houston, BC, Canada For the past eight months I have had a condition known as frozen shoulder. During this time I was seeing a physiotherapist and an orthopaedic surgeon. I even underwent a procedure called manipulation under anaesthetic. These treatments helped but unfortunately did not cure my frozen shoulder. At present I am seeing Servaas and practicing the somatic exercises that he describes. My frozen shoulder is still not cured but I feel Im making great progress. The pain is decreasing and the mobility in my shoulder is increasing. As I do the exercises I am also gaining mobility in areas other than my shoulder. I feel that somatics will prevent the frozen shoulder from reoccurring and lead to more whole body flexibility throughout my life.î
