The Myth of Aging

Somatics for Seniors

Unfortunately, many seniors are not able to move the way they want to move. Over time, they have lost movement and have become rigid in for instance their spine, their shoulders or their hips. Injuries from the past, surgeries or physical or emotional stress have accumulated over the years and tightened up their muscles. This tightness, which is involuntarily controlled by the brain, restricts proper circulation and decreases range of motion within the joints. Pain and stiffness are usually the result. When understanding the somatic concepts of human movement, it becomes obvious that many of these ailments are directly related to a habituated pattern of muscular tightness throughout the system. This pattern of involuntary and subconscious tightness usually develops over a period of time, creating the belief in our society that many dysfunctions are directly related to our process of ‘aging’. However, this aging process is in many cases nothing more than the manifestation of the characteristics of Sensory Motor Amnesia.

With Somatic Education you will learn movement patterns that are easier and more organic for the human body. Your body will unlearn its inefficient and painful movement patterns, instantly releasing tightness, pain and discomfort. Sensory Motor Amnesia will be reversed into Sensory Motor Learning through a gentle process of Somatic Education that doesn’t require much physical effort. Movements with ease, with concentration and without pain can easily be taught to the elderly. Somatic movements are not only ideal for the elderly because they return full range of motion throughout the physical body, but also stimulate many brain functions at the same time. The movements are very safe to perform with supervision but are also very safe to perform independently as well.

The Myth of Aging

The Somatic Health Center of St. Helena has worked with many elderly people. Whenever their capability to concentrate is still adequate and whenever they are willing to upgrade their own situation, many instant changes have taken place. Walking becomes easier, posture straightens up, breathing becomes easier, smiling returns and tremors have diminished or vanished. It is the strong belief of The Somatic Health Center that somatic movements are the key to maintaining health & wellness and youthfulness & grace. An upgrade in the quality of ‘brain function’ in combination with an upgrade in the quality of physical functioning are essential for preventing diseases and illnesses that are typical for the elderly population. Parkinson’s Disease, Alzheimer’s Disease and many other diseases all have a component of a strong reduction in movement. Maintaining that basic quality or upgrading that quality is fundamental for healthy aging. Somatic Education teaches the fundamental movement patterns for human existence. As long as you embody those, you will be aging well !

The Somatic Health Center is very interested in assisting research and therapy in relation to the aging process. ‘Somatics for Seniors’ / ‘Myth of Aging’ – Workshops can be organized in your area. Please contact The Somatic Health Center for further details.
